Mechani-Kon is the brainchild of Alex Bedard and Thurston Hillman. Thought up over the course of four years, the event was originally intended to strictly be a tournament for one of the many tabletop miniature games being played. The idea of a tournament was slowly converted into that of a gaming convention, and eventually Mechani-Kon was born.
Named in honour of the two first tournaments scheduled to be run; Mechani-Kon steals from both the lore of Games-Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 as well as Privateer Press' Iron Kingdoms. 'Mechani' represents the famed Adeptus Mechanicus from 40k, while the 'Kon' represents the overt use of the letter K in most Iron Kingdoms spelling as well as the Orks in Warhammer 40k.
The goal of Mechani-Kon is to be the best gaming convention in the Winnipeg area. There are plenty of excellent conventions that do already run in the area, but none of them are devoted strictly to gaming. Mechani-Kon intends to fill that gap and present games with an environment that is focused on gaming of all varieties. If it's a tabletop miniature game, classic board games, new board games, card games, or even role-playing games, we welcome it!
This year marks the second Mechani-Kon (aptly nicknamed MK2) and will be running one day; September 18th, 2010 at the Robert A Steen Community center located in lovely central Winnipeg
